Hello Friends!
There are so many meaningful moments woven into a wedding day, but the first dance has always felt especially special to me.
After the ceremony, the portraits, the grand entrance and all of the excitement that comes with finally celebrating with the people you love, the first dance creates a little pocket of time that feels entirely different.
For a few minutes, everything seems to slow down.
Some couples sway quietly together. Some laugh through the nerves. Some surprise their guests with a perfectly timed spin or a little choreography. And some simply hold each other close and take in the moment.
There really is no one right way to have a first dance.
What matters most is that it feels like the two of you.

A MOMENT TO SIMPLY BE TOGETHER
Wedding days move quickly.
There are timelines to follow, photographs to take, people to greet and traditions to celebrate. Even with the most thoughtful planning, the day can feel beautifully full from beginning to end.
That is part of what makes the first dance so meaningful.
It is one of those rare moments when a couple gets to simply be together in the middle of the celebration they have spent months—or sometimes years—planning.
The room may be filled with family and friends, but for a few minutes, it can almost feel like no one else is there.

YOUR FIRST DANCE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A PERFORMANCE
One of the things I always want couples to remember is that a first dance does not have to be elaborate to be beautiful.
You do not need complicated choreography. You do not need a dramatic dip. You do not even need to feel completely comfortable dancing in front of a room full of people.
You can simply move together.
And if dancing really is your thing? Have fun with it.
Some of my favorite first-dance moments are the ones when you can see a couple’s personality come through—the laughter, the spins and those little looks between them that say everything without saying a word.

LET THE MOMENT FEEL LIKE YOU
There is something especially beautiful about seeing how differently each couple experiences this tradition.
Some first dances are quiet and romantic.
Others are playful.
Some couples spend the entire song looking into each other’s eyes, while others are smiling at their guests before quickly turning their attention right back to each other.
That individuality is exactly what makes the moment memorable.
Your wedding should feel like your wedding, and the first dance is no exception.

THE ROOM BECOMES PART OF THE MEMORY
While the couple is always the focus, the setting surrounding a first dance can make the moment feel even more magical.
The glow of candlelight.
A beautifully designed dance floor.
Soft uplighting.
A room filled with people who have gathered just to celebrate you.
When all of those details come together, they create the backdrop for a memory that will live far beyond the wedding day.

SOMETIMES THE BEST MOMENTS ARE THE UNPLANNED ONES
One of my favorite things about wedding photography is seeing the moments that could never have been placed perfectly on a timeline.
The laugh that happens in the middle of a dance.
The unexpected spin.
A whispered comment.
The expression on a groom’s face when his bride looks up at him.
Those are often the photographs that become favorites because they feel real.

AND THEN THE CELEBRATION CONTINUES
The first dance may only last a few minutes, but it often feels like the moment the reception truly settles into itself.
Soon the dance floor fills.
The music gets louder.
Guests join in.
Shoes may eventually come off.
And the celebration takes on a life of its own.
But before all of that happens, there is this one little pause—a newly married couple, standing together in the middle of everything they created.
That is the beauty of the first dance.

A LITTLE WEDDING WEDNESDAY REMINDER
If you are planning your own first dance, choose a song and a style that feel natural to you.
Practice if it will help you feel more comfortable. Skip the choreography if it will only make you nervous. Add a spin if you want one. Laugh if you miss a step.
And when the moment arrives, try not to think about everyone watching.
Look at the person standing in front of you.
Take it all in.
Because like so many of the best parts of a wedding day, it will be over much too quickly.
What was your first dance song—or what song would you choose?
