Hello Friends!
There’s something special about gathering friends in the middle of the day, especially when good food, refreshing drinks, and even better company are involved.
For September’s Daytime Happy Hour at Home, I hosted Sips + Sandwiches, a relaxed afternoon centered around a build-your-own sandwich station, seasonal sangria, and a few thoughtful details that made an ordinary Tuesday feel like a celebration.
The idea was to keep the menu approachable, the presentation beautiful, and the afternoon easy enough for everyone, including the host, to enjoy.
A SANDWICH STATION MADE FOR SHARING
Rather than serving a traditional plated lunch, I created a build-your-own sandwich station that allowed guests to make their sandwiches exactly how they liked them.
I started with three bread options: Hawaiian rolls, traditional sliced bread, and mini croissants. An assortment of freshly sliced deli meats, cheeses, bacon, toppings, and condiments gave everyone plenty of combinations to choose from.
I also prepared a few sandwiches ahead of time, including mini egg salad croissants, for guests who preferred to grab something ready to enjoy.
The beauty of a sandwich station is its versatility. Guests can help themselves, return for seconds, and create their favorite combinations without the formality of a plated meal.

SOMETHING TO SIP
Of course, a happy hour wouldn’t be complete without something refreshing to sip!
For this gathering, I leaned into the transition from summer to fall with a batch of Apple Cider Sangria. Crisp apples, white wine, bourbon, and seasonal flavors made for a cocktail that felt especially fitting for late September.
Preparing a batch cocktail ahead of time is one of my favorite entertaining tips. It allows the flavors to come together before guests arrive and eliminates the need to prepare individual drinks throughout the gathering.
I also made sure there were refreshing nonalcoholic options available.

A LITTLE SOMETHING ON THE SIDE
A sandwich station doesn’t require an elaborate selection of sides. A fresh salad, a couple of bowls of chips, and a sweet bite are more than enough to round out the menu.
For this gathering, I served a seasonal mixed green salad with apples, dried cranberries, cheese, and nuts. Two varieties of potato chips offered something familiar and easy to enjoy alongside the sandwiches.
Mini cupcakes added a playful finishing touch without the need for additional dessert preparation.
One of my favorite hosting reminders is that everything doesn’t have to be homemade to feel special. Thoughtful presentation can make even the most familiar grocery store favorites feel like part of a beautifully curated menu.

THE DETAILS THAT MAKE IT SPECIAL
As an event planner, I believe the smallest details often make the biggest impression.
For Sips + Sandwiches, I focused on creating an afternoon that felt polished without being overly formal. Coordinating white serving pieces, a thoughtfully arranged station, fresh flowers, and seasonal drink garnishes helped bring everything together.
The colorful floral arrangement provided a beautiful focal point, while cake stands and individual serving dishes added dimension to the display.
One of my favorite moments was watching everyone create their own sandwiches, choosing their favorite combinations and returning to the station throughout the afternoon.
It was a reminder that beautiful entertaining isn’t about creating an elaborate production. It’s about making people feel welcome and giving them an opportunity to enjoy one another.

After all, entertaining at home should feel just as enjoyable for the host as it does for the guests.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
If you’re looking for an easy way to gather friends, consider hosting your own daytime happy hour.
Choose a familiar food concept, add a signature cocktail, and incorporate a few details that make the occasion feel intentional.
Whether it’s sandwiches in September, pizza in October, or soup on a chilly November afternoon, there’s always a reason to bring people together.

Good food. Good drinks. Even better company.
Cheers to celebrating the everyday!

Would you host a daytime happy hour at home? What would you serve?
