Hello Friends!
There is something about the beginning of fall that makes home feel especially comforting. The temperatures begin to shift, the days feel a little slower, and I find myself reaching for the little details that make our spaces feel warm and welcoming.
One of my favorites is a simmer pot.
With just a few fresh ingredients, the scent of apple, citrus, cinnamon, and herbs slowly makes its way through the house. It is an easy way to welcome the season and create a cozy atmosphere at home.
A SIMPLE WAY TO WELCOME FALL
A simmer pot is a combination of fresh fruit, herbs, spices, and water gently simmered together on the stove.
For this early fall version, I wanted something warm and seasonal without feeling too much like the holidays. Apples and oranges bring a fresh sweetness, cinnamon and cloves add warmth, star anise brings a hint of spice, and rosemary gives everything an earthy finish.
It smells like fall without rushing us into Christmas.

INGREDIENTS

-
1 apple, sliced
-
1 orange, sliced
-
2–3 cinnamon sticks
-
1 teaspoon whole cloves
-
2–3 whole star anise
-
2 small sprigs fresh rosemary
-
Water
INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1
Slice the apple and orange into rounds. Set aside the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and fresh rosemary.
Step 2
Add water to your saucepan or simmer pot, filling it approximately halfway to start.

Step 3
Add the sliced apple and orange, followed by the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and fresh rosemary.
Add additional water as needed, leaving enough space at the top for the ingredients to move freely.

Step 4
Transfer the pot to the stove, bring the water to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Allow everything to simmer uncovered, adding more water as needed so the pot never boils dry.
As the ingredients warm, the fragrance will slowly make its way throughout your home.
Use a stovetop-safe pot suitable for your type of burner.

SIMMER POT NOTES
-
Keep the heat low once the water begins to simmer.
-
Check the water level periodically and add more as needed.
-
The ingredient amounts do not have to be exact. Adjust the fruit, herbs, and spices based on the scents you enjoy most.
-
Never leave a simmer pot unattended on the stove.
-
When you are finished, allow the contents to cool completely before discarding.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
One of my favorite things about a simmer pot is that it does not have to be exact.
Add a little more cinnamon if you love warm spice, another sprig of rosemary for a more herbal scent, or an extra slice of orange for a brighter citrus note.
Later in the season, cranberries, pears, fresh ginger, or a splash of vanilla would also be beautiful additions.
For now, I am keeping mine fresh, warm, and perfectly suited for these first few weeks of fall.
THE LITTLE THINGS AT HOME
Beautiful moments at home do not always require an elaborate setup.
Sometimes it is fresh flowers on the counter, a favorite candle burning in the evening, dinner simmering on the stove, or a pot filled with apples, oranges, and cinnamon making the entire house smell wonderful.
Those small details change the way a home feels.
And as we settle into a new season, that feels worth celebrating.

What scent immediately makes your home feel like fall?
