When welcoming guests into my home, I love thinking beyond what they can see. The little details—what they hear, taste, touch, and even smell—all contribute to how a space feels and the experience we create for the people we welcome into it.
Scent is one of the simplest ways to set the mood. While I love a beautiful candle, a simmer pot is an easy, natural way to fill your home with fragrance using ingredients you may already have in your kitchen.
For spring, I love combining fresh citrus, mint, florals, and a touch of essential oil. As everything gently simmers together, the fragrance feels fresh and inviting—the perfect finishing touch before guests arrive.
INGREDIENTS
- Orange slices
- Lemon slices
- Lime slices
- Fresh mint leaves
- Fresh floral blooms
- Lavender essential oil
- Lemongrass essential oil
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1
Add the orange, lemon, and lime slices to a simmer pot along with the fresh mint and floral blooms.
Step 2
Fill the pot approximately halfway with water.
Step 3
Add a few drops of lavender and lemongrass essential oils.
Step 4
Bring the water to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow the fragrance to fill your home, adding additional water as needed.
HOSTESS TIP
Prepare your simmer pot shortly before guests arrive so the fragrance has time to gently move throughout your home. Keep the heat low, check the water periodically, and never leave a simmering pot unattended.
You can also make the recipe your own by changing the ingredients with the seasons. The goal isn’t an overpowering fragrance—just a subtle scent that becomes part of the atmosphere you’ve thoughtfully created.
