Some of the sweetest date nights don’t require reservations or even leaving home.
One evening, Jovan and I turned our kitchen island into a little wine tasting for two. I selected four wines—two reds and two whites—and paired each one with a few simple bites to enjoy along the way.
It was relaxed, cozy, and such a fun way to spend time together.
And while an at-home wine tasting would be perfect for Valentine’s Day or an anniversary, I also love the idea of creating one simply because you want to make an ordinary evening feel a little more special.
CREATE YOUR WINE TASTING
You don’t need an elaborate wine collection to create a tasting at home.
I chose four different wines so we could experience a variety of flavors:
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Malbec
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Riesling
A mix of two reds and two whites gave us plenty of variety without making the tasting feel overwhelming.
I poured a small amount of each wine into individual glasses and arranged them in tasting order along the kitchen island.
ADD A FEW SIMPLE PAIRINGS
This may have been my favorite part of the evening.
Instead of preparing a traditional charcuterie board, I created individual tasting mats using kraft paper. I wrote the name of each wine along with a few foods to taste alongside it, then arranged everything directly on the paper.
Our pairings included:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Multi-grain crackers, sharp cheddar, peppered beef jerky and blackberries
Malbec
Rosemary crackers, aged cheddar, Italian salami and kiwi
Sauvignon Blanc
Water crackers, goat cheese, roasted turkey and green apple
Riesling
Veggie crackers, Havarti, prosciutto and dark chocolate
There’s no need to serve a large portion of anything. A bite or two of each accompaniment is plenty and gives you an opportunity to notice how different flavors can change the way each wine tastes.
The tasting also creates a little built-in activity for the evening. We could compare favorites, talk about the combinations we liked most, and go back for another taste of anything that surprised us.
MAKE IT FEEL LIKE DATE NIGHT
Because the tasting itself was fairly simple, I added just a few details to make the evening feel a little more special.
Tall taper candles brought warmth to the kitchen, and using a separate glass for each wine made the setup feel more intentional.
But my favorite detail may have been the handwritten kraft-paper tasting mats.
They served as both our place settings and our tasting guide while still keeping everything casual and approachable for an evening at home.
You could easily create something similar with kraft paper, parchment paper or even simple cardstock. The beauty is in keeping it personal rather than perfect.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
One of the things I love most about an at-home wine tasting is how easily you can customize it.
Choose wines you’ve been wanting to try, revisit a few favorites, or select bottles from one particular region. Your food pairings can be just as personal—use favorite cheeses, crackers, meats, fruit, chocolate or whatever sounds good to the two of you.
And you certainly don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day.
An at-home wine tasting would be lovely for an anniversary, birthday date night, quiet Friday evening or simply one of those nights when you want to slow down and enjoy a little time together.
For us, the evening was such a sweet reminder that creating a special moment at home doesn’t have to be complicated.
A few bottles of wine, some thoughtfully chosen bites, candlelight and good company were more than enough.
Every day is a day worth celebrating.
