Hello Friends!
There’s something about sunflowers that instantly makes a space feel warm and cheerful.
Their golden petals and oversized blooms are such a beautiful way to bring a little seasonal color indoors, especially as summer begins to transition into fall. Whether you’re adding a few stems to the kitchen, styling the table for guests, or simply picking up a bunch while you’re out, a little care can help fresh sunflowers stay beautiful for longer.
Today, I’m sharing a few simple tips for caring for fresh-cut sunflowers at home.

START WITH A CLEAN VASE
Before arranging your flowers, make sure your vase is thoroughly cleaned. Fresh water and a clean vessel help limit bacteria, which can shorten the life of cut flowers.
Fill the vase with fresh water and your preferred flower food according to the package instructions.
REMOVE THE LOWER LEAVES
Remove any leaves that will fall below the water line before placing your sunflowers in the vase.
Submerged foliage can break down quickly and encourage bacteria to grow in the water, so keeping the lower portion of each stem clean is an easy way to help your flowers stay fresh.
GIVE THE STEMS A FRESH CUT
Using clean floral shears or a sharp knife, trim each sunflower stem at approximately a 45-degree angle.

The angled cut gives the stem a larger surface area for taking in water. I also like to vary the stem lengths slightly when arranging them so the finished arrangement feels relaxed and natural.
CONDITION WILTED SUNFLOWERS
Sunflowers can sometimes become a little droopy, particularly after being transported or left out of water.
If your stems need a little extra help, recut them and place them into fresh water as soon as possible. Very warm water can sometimes help freshly cut stems hydrate, but avoid water that is hot enough to damage the flowers.
Give them a little time to drink before arranging.
REFRESH THE WATER REGULARLY
Fresh water makes such a difference.
Every couple of days, empty and rinse the vase, add fresh water, and give the bottom of each stem another small trim. This helps keep the water cleaner while giving the flowers a fresh surface for water absorption.
If you notice any fading leaves or petals along the way, simply remove them.

ENJOY THE SEASON
Sunflowers don’t need an elaborate arrangement to make an impact. A simple bunch in a favorite vase can bring so much warmth to a kitchen counter, entry table, or casual fall gathering.
And sometimes, those uncomplicated seasonal touches are my favorite way to make home feel special.
