A Simple Way to Freshen Your Oven for Fall Entertaining

November 17, 2023

Hello Friends!

As the holiday season approaches, I always find myself wanting to refresh little areas around our home—especially the kitchen.

November brings so many opportunities for gathering, from Thanksgiving dinner to holiday baking and cozy celebrations with family and friends. And while preparing to entertain usually makes us think about menus, flowers, and table settings, sometimes the simplest behind-the-scenes details make a difference too.

One of those details? A fresh, clean oven.

Instead of reaching for harsh cleaners, I like this simple method using just lemons, water, and a little baking soda. It’s an easy way to freshen your oven before a busy season of cooking, baking, and entertaining.

START WITH LEMON AND STEAM

Preheat your oven to 400°F.

Slice a lemon and place the slices in an oven-safe dish. Add enough water to cover the lemon slices, then place the dish in the oven for approximately 20 minutes.

As the water warms, the steam helps loosen buildup inside the oven while the lemon provides a fresh, clean scent.

LET EVERYTHING COOL SLIGHTLY

After 20 minutes, carefully remove the dish and allow both the oven and lemon water to cool slightly.

You want everything to remain warm enough to help with cleaning, but comfortable and safe to handle.

WIPE THE OVEN CLEAN

Dip a microfiber cloth into the warm lemon water and use it to wipe down the interior of the oven.

The steam should have softened much of the residue, making everyday buildup easier to remove.

GIVE TOUGHER SPOTS A LITTLE EXTRA ATTENTION

For areas that need a bit more scrubbing, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda onto half of a lemon and gently work it over the spot.

Then wipe everything clean with your damp microfiber cloth.

For heavier grease or baked-on residue, you may need a stronger cleaning method, but I love this simple approach for regular freshening between deeper cleanings.

READY FOR A SEASON OF GATHERING

There is something satisfying about knowing the kitchen is ready before the cooking even begins.

Fresh flowers on the counter, a few favorite recipes planned, and a clean oven waiting for the next batch of something delicious—it’s another reminder that entertaining often begins long before guests walk through the door.

Sometimes, preparing our homes with care is part of the celebration too.

What are some of the little things you like to do around your home before a season of entertaining begins?

Nothing elaborate—just a favorite glass of wine, a few simple bites, and a little time to slow down.

For this little happy hour moment, I poured a glass of Riesling and paired it with a simple board of sharp cheddar, salami, pepperoni, crackers, grapes, olives, and glazed nuts.

Sometimes, making an ordinary afternoon feel special really can be that simple.
